May Moments: What’s On in Notting Hill, Kensington & Chelsea 2026

May is a strong month for West London’s cultural calendar. Across Kensington, Notting Hill and Chelsea, the weeks ahead bring a mix of garden events, design exhibitions, historic house tours and open-air performances, from Chelsea in Bloom to Opera Holland Park and a series of more intimate local events.


Chelsea in Bloom

Chelsea in Bloom returns this May, bringing floral installations to shopfronts, restaurants and public spaces around Chelsea. This year’s theme, ‘Out of this World’, will see the area interpreted through space-inspired displays, making it a good moment for a walk through Sloane Square, Duke of York Square and the King’s Road. Running alongside the RHS Chelsea Flower Show, it is one of the easiest ways to experience the area’s seasonal energy without needing a ticketed event.

One of the best-known events in the London spring calendar, the RHS Chelsea Flower Show returns to the Royal Hospital Chelsea this month. The show brings together garden design, planting, craftsmanship and outdoor living, with its influence often felt well beyond the showground itself. Even for those not attending, the surrounding streets tend to take on a more celebratory feel, with floral displays, busy terraces and garden-inspired shopfronts appearing across Chelsea.


NIGO: From Japan with Love at the Design Museum

The Design Museum opens NIGO: From Japan with Love on 1 May, a major exhibition exploring the work and influence of Japanese designer and creative director NIGO. With more than 700 objects on display, the exhibition spans fashion, streetwear, craft, ceramics and collecting, including rare pieces from NIGO’s personal archive.


Opera Holland Park

Opera Holland Park begins its 2026 season this month, bringing music and performance back to one of Kensington’s most atmospheric settings. Early-season events include Prelude on 5 May and Songs on the Steps from 15 May, with the first main-stage production, Puccini’s La fanciulla del West, opening later in the month. Set within Holland Park, it marks the beginning of the area’s summer cultural calendar and offers a more distinctive alternative to a traditional evening out.


Chelsea Physic Garden: May Day Events & Plant Festival

Chelsea Physic Garden has a particularly seasonal programme at the start of May. On 1 May, the garden hosts a ‘Bringing in the May’ Garland Workshop, exploring May Day traditions, plants and folklore, followed by an evening May Day celebration centred around seasonal ritual and the arrival of summer. The Plant Festival follows on 2 May, with plant stalls, botanical gifts, food, drink and gardening demonstrations throughout the day. It is a lovely option for readers interested in gardens, planting and local heritage, and feels a little more tucked-away than the larger Chelsea events.


Leighton House: Lunchtime Curator-Led Tour
