Agent Speaks

Sam Allport, Mountgrange HeritageSam recently joined Mountgrange Heritage to head up Sales in our Bayswater office. In a recent interview for The Grove Resident, he talked about how he got to where he is today.

1. Who is the person that has influenced you the most?
My father was a Partner in an agency in a small market town. I remember walking up the High Street with him and constantly having to stop while he chatted to someone. I grew up in denial thinking I don’t want to do what he does and yet here I am!

2. What’s the biggest difference in your area today from 10 years ago?
The obvious one is the prices. I started in 1999 by selling a 2 bed top floor flat on Ladbroke Grove for £180,000 right opposite the tube station. It was a record breaking price at the time yet seems unbelievably cheap now.

3. What’s the most popular type of architecture with buyers?
The period conversion properties with the high ceilings and big windows are always in demand, especially with European buyers.

4. The piece of advice you would give to your younger self…
Never believe that prices cannot go up any more. I am constantly being told this but take a look over the last 30 years and see the evidence. What seems normal now would have been unthinkable just a few years ago.

5. What’s your favourite part of your job?
It is all about the people. The joy of the job is that I meet different people every day of the week. In Bayswater they are such colourful cosmopolitan people. I love to spend time with them, to build up rapport and trust, which leads to lasting relationships with repeat business and referrals.

6. The thing you would change if you were Mayor of London for the day?
Since starting my Sales Manager role I have ditched the car. I walk to all my appointments and use the bus, tube or bicycle for longer journeys. I feel fitter and slimmer and see so much more of the details of London when out. I would ban all traffic in London for the day.

7. And finally, what’s your guiltiest pleasure in life…
Real quality chocolate.
