Where are the best places for outdoor dining in Notting Hill and Kensington?

This weekend looks set to be our first real taste of summer (temperatures hotter than Ibiza anyone?!) so what better way to make the most of it by partaking in a spot of alfresco dining? We may be biased but we think there’s nowhere better to be than in London in the sun!

We asked our team to give us their suggestions for the best places for outdoor dining in Notting Hill and Kensington. Their recommendations are below. Be warned, you may need to book! Enjoy the sunshine.

The Windsor Castle

The Windsor Castle on Campden Hill Road has long been one of our favourite pubs and it comes into its own on a sunny day with a lovely garden and good times vibe!

According to their website, The Windsor Castle’s exterior used to be the place where ‘ostlers and coachmen grumbled while the “gentlefolk” supped their ale inside’. Today though their pub garden is one of the most sought-after alfresco spots in west London.

There are heated areas ideal for eating outside and thanks to the outside bar there’s no need to traipse inside to get your round.

Garden Bar & Grill

As its name suggests, its all about the garden at the Garden Bar and Grill on Bramley Road next to Latimer Road tube station.

Garden Bar and Grill has the largest garden in central London, open for alfresco drinking, dining and BBQs. The gorgeous private garden has its own thatched outside bar and they also have a 9 sq metre outdoor screen for movies and sporting events.

The food at Garden Bar and Grill is European in flavour theme whilst including classics such as Bangers and Mash, Salmon and Dill Fishcakes and Chicken Caesar Salad. They usually feature six daily specials, using the freshest seasonal produce available from the market. All their food is freshly prepared and in summer, they fire up their famous BBQ.

The Ledbury

Now firmly established as one of the capital’s best restaurants with its two Michelin Stars, the Ledbury has a terrace that’s perfect for enjoying its exquisite food and wine. The terrace doesn’t accept reservations so it’s a great way of leapfrogging the usual waiting list for a table. We found this useful tip from the very excellent website Bon Vivant.

The Summerhouse and Waterway restaurants in Little Venice

Although not strictly in Notting Hill, many of us locals head over to the delights of Little Venice in W9 when the sun graces us with its presence.

Situated on the Grand Union Canal only a stone’s throw from each other are the Summerhouse and Waterway restaurants, run by the same team.

The Summerhouse, opposite 60 Blomfield Road, has tables overlooking the water and offers a lovely range of summer salads as well as a delicious range of fish dishes. Indeed they claim that their fish and chips are the best in town!

The Waterway has one of west London’s best outdoor terraces with gorgeous views over looking the Grand Union Canal. The large terrace has plenty of tables and food on offer includes a special brunch menu as well as a terrace menu including salads, fish and a great range of burgers.

Best places for Outdoor Dining in Kensington

Kensington roof gardens

We couldn’t write a piece about alfresco dining in Kensington without mentioning Kensington Roof Gardens. Their amazing 1.5-acre rooftop space, accessed from 99 Kensington High Street includes three different themed gardens complete with its own flock of flamingoes!

When not booked for a private event the gardens are open to the public to explore. Alfresco diners can book to eat in their 7th floor restaurant Babylon which has its own outdoor terrace serving an assortment of seasonal seafood dishes including fresh Scottish smoked salmon, lobster and king prawns. This is the best place for spectacular views over London’s skyline and the stunning gardens.

The Orangery – Kensington Palace

The Orangery in Kensington Palace is the perfect place for a quintessentially English alfresco experience. Surrounded by beautiful formal gardens in the grounds of Kensington Palace, The Orangery is a relaxed and elegant setting for breakfast or lunch and the only royal palace in London where you can enjoy a traditional afternoon tea.

The Orangery was once the setting for Queen Anne’s sophisticated court entertainment and its soaring ceilings and classical 18th century architecture are a magnificent backdrop for the restaurant’s simple yet refined menu of English dishes such as Roast Duck Breast and Baked Cornish Cod.

Serpentine Bar & Kitchen in Hyde Park

The Serpentine Bar and Kitchen resides in a gorgeous spot on the edge of the Serpentine lake in the green heart of London, Hyde Park.

Run by café chain Benugo, you’ll be hard pressed to find a better spot to enjoy an al fresco meal or drink, with plenty of tables and chairs, inviting shade under a wide canopy and fantastic views out over the lake.

Food on offer includes pizzas made to order from a wood-fired oven, British classics like fish and chips or fresh and seasonal salads.

In the summer, they celebrate the sunny days with pop-up BBQs and their Gin Bar serves up jugs of Pimm’s, draft beers and cocktails.

If you have any suggestions for alfresco dining spots in Notting Hill and Kensington, why not send them to us so we can add to our list?
